Ceiling fans make a real difference in Baton Rouge homes. They keep air moving during our long, hot summers, help distribute heat in the winter, and cut down on energy costs year-round. But a ceiling fan only works as well as it’s installed. Poor installation leads to wobbling, noise, and fans that don’t move enough air to be worth the trouble.
BIG Family Electrical Services & EV Charger Installation has been installing ceiling fans in Baton Rouge homes since 2006. We handle everything from basic bedroom fans to large outdoor fans for covered patios. Our electricians make sure your fan is securely mounted, properly wired, and balanced so it runs quietly and efficiently for years.
Installing a ceiling fan involves more than screwing a bracket to your ceiling. The electrical box has to be rated for fan support, the wiring needs to be done correctly for the controls you want, and the fan itself has to be assembled and balanced properly. Louisiana’s humidity also means taking extra care with outdoor installations to ensure fans hold up in our climate.

Eric was great. He did a thorough job checking out my issue, and while he couldn't find the exact cause, he fixed what we both thought the issue was. As of now, no complaints. They were very fast getting out to me, which was crucial because I work from home.

Ceiling Fan Designs, Types & Features
- Standard Ceiling Fans: These are the most common fans you'll see in bedrooms, living rooms, and dining areas. They typically have 52-inch blade spans, though sizes range from 42 to 60 inches or more. Most come with light kits, either included or available as add-ons. Standard fans work well in rooms with ceilings 8 to 9 feet high.
- Low Profile Fans: Also called hugger fans, these sit tight against the ceiling without a downrod. They're designed for rooms with low ceilings where a standard fan would hang too low. If your ceiling is under 8 feet, a low-profile fan is usually your best option.
- Outdoor and Damp-Rated Fans: Outdoor fans are built to handle Baton Rouge's humidity, rain, and temperature swings. They have wet-rated or damp-rated motors and rust-resistant finishes. Damp-rated fans work in covered areas like screened porches. Wet-rated fans can handle direct rain exposure. Don't put an indoor fan outside as it'll rust and fail quickly in Louisiana's climate.
- Smart and Remote-Control Fans: Many modern fans include remote controls or WiFi connectivity. Remote-controlled fans let you adjust speed and lighting without wall switches. Smart fans connect to your phone or voice assistants, allowing control from anywhere and integration with home automation systems.
- Energy-Efficient DC Motor Fans: Newer DC motor fans use less electricity than traditional AC motor fans, run quieter, and often have more speed options. They cost more initially, but the energy savings add up over time, especially if you run fans year-round.
Professional Ceiling Fan Installation Solutions
We install ceiling fans correctly so they run quietly, move air effectively, and stay secure.
- Electrical Box Assessment and Replacement: Not every electrical box can support a ceiling fan. Standard light fixture boxes aren't rated for the weight and movement of a fan. We check your existing box first and replace it with a fan-rated box if needed. We install boxes with proper bracing that span between joists for maximum strength.
- Proper Wiring for Your Controls: How you want to control your fan determines the wiring we need to run. Wall controls for fan speed and lights require the right conductors between the switch and the fan. If you're adding a fan where there wasn't one before, we run new wiring and make sure the circuit has capacity for the additional load.
- Secure Mounting and Assembly: We assemble your fan according to the manufacturer's instructions, making sure all components are tight and properly connected. Downrod length matters for both safety and performance. Fans should hang at least 7 feet above the floor and ideally 8 to 10 inches below the ceiling for optimal airflow.
- Balancing and Testing: After installation, we test the fan at all speeds to check for wobbling or noise. We adjust blade angles or use balancing kits as needed. We also test all electrical functions including lights, remote controls, and wall switches, before considering the job complete.
- Outdoor Installations: Outdoor fans need extra attention to weatherproofing. All electrical connections get sealed properly, and we make sure moisture can't get into the motor housing. Baton Rouge's humidity means even covered outdoor areas expose fans to significant moisture, so we use fans designed for these conditions.
Enhancing Home Comfort & Energy Savings
Ceiling fans make your home more comfortable and reduce the load on your HVAC system, which saves energy and money.
- Better air circulation year-round creates a wind-chill effect in summer that lets you set your thermostat higher without sacrificing comfort.
- Reduced HVAC runtime means your air conditioner cycles on and off less frequently, which reduces wear and extends its lifespan.
- Zone comfort control lets you cool the rooms you’re using without adjusting the thermostat for your entire home.
- Better sleep quality comes from the white noise fans create and the air movement that keeps you comfortable during warm Baton Rouge nights.
- Improved indoor air quality results from constant air circulation that prevents stale air and reduces the likelihood of mold or mildew.
In winter, running fans in reverse on low speed pushes warm air down from the ceiling, helping distribute heat more evenly. During our long cooling season, the energy savings from running fans instead of lowering the AC show up on your electric bill every month.

Common Ceiling Fan Installation Questions
How much does ceiling fan installation cost in Baton Rouge?
Installation typically costs between $150 and $400, depending on whether we need to install a new electrical box, run new wiring, or add wall controls. If you already have a fan-rated box and wiring in place, installation is on the lower end. We provide free estimates.
Can you install a ceiling fan where there's currently just a light?
Usually yes, but we need to verify the electrical box is rated for fan support. If it isn’t adequate, we replace it with a fan-rated box before installation. We’ll also check that the electrical circuit can handle the additional load if your new fan has lights.
What size ceiling fan do I need for my room?
Fans with 42-inch blade spans work in rooms up to 150 square feet. Rooms from 150 to 225 square feet need 44 to 50-inch fans. Larger rooms up to 400 square feet need 52 to 56-inch fans. Bigger rooms may need multiple fans or fans with blade spans over 60 inches.
Should I choose a fan with lights or add lights separately?
It depends on your room’s lighting needs. If the fan is your primary light source, get one with an integrated light kit. If you have other lighting, a fan without lights is fine and often less expensive. Most fans can have light kits added later.
How do I know if I need a damp-rated or wet-rated fan?
Damp-rated fans work in covered outdoor areas where they won’t get directly rained on, like screened porches. Wet-rated fans handle direct weather exposure. If there’s any chance rain can hit the fan, go with wet-rated. For indoor rooms with high humidity like bathrooms, damp-rated fans are appropriate.
